چکیده

Polling systems have been extensively studied, and have found many applications. They have often been used for studying wired local area networks such as token passing rings and wireless local area networks such as bluetooth. In this contribution we relax one of the main restrictions on the statistical assumptions under which polling systems have been analyzed. Namely, we allow correlation between walking times. We consider (i) the gated regime where a gate closes whenever the server arrives at a queue. It then serves at that queue all customers who were present when the gate closes. (ii) The exhaustive regime in which the server remains at a queue till it empties. Our analysis is based on stochastic recursive equations related to branching processes with migration with a random environment. In addition to our derivation of expected waiting times for polling systems with correlated walking times, we set the foundations for computing second order statistics of the general multi-dimensional stochastic recursions.

When Does Forced Idle Time Improve Performance in Polling Models?

Sarkar and Zangwill (1991) showed by numerical examples that reduction in setup times can, surprisingly, actually increase work in process in some cyclic production systems (that is, reduction in switchover times can increase waiting times in some polling models). We present, for polling models with exhaustive and gated service disciplines, some explicit formulas that provide additional insight...

Gated{type Polling Systems with Walking and Switch-in Times

We consider models of polling systems where switching times between channels are composed of two parts: walking times required to move from one channel (station) to another, and switch-in times that are incurred only when the server enters a station to render service. We analyze three Gated-type systems: (i) Cyclic polling with Gated regime, (ii) Cyclic polling with Globally-Gated regime, and (...

Some Qualitative Properties in Polling SystemsEitan ALTMAN

Architectures parall eles, Bases de donn ees, R eseaux et Syst emes distribu es Abstract Consider a polling system with K 1 queues and a single server that visits the queues in a cyclic order. The polling discipline in each queue is of general gated-type or exhaustive-type. We assume that in each queue the arrival times form a Poisson process, and that the service times, the walking times as we...

Setups in Polling Models: Does It Make Sense to Set up If No Work Is Waiting?

We compare two versions of a symmetric two-queue polling model with switchover times and setup times. The SI version has State-Independent setups, according to which the server sets up at the polled queue whether or not work is waiting there; and the SD version has State-Dependent setups, according to which the server sets up only when work is waiting at the polled queue. Naive intuition would ...
